The Rooted In Community National Network (RIC) is a national network of groups of youth and adults working for food justice.
The Rooted In Community (RIC) is a national grassroots network that empowers young people to take leadership in their own communities. We are a diverse movement of youth and adults working together and committed to fostering healthy communities and food justice through urban and rural agriculture, community gardening, food security, and related environmental justice work.
We believe in
Inclusiveness, equity, and empowerment for young leaders
The reality that youth, in strong partnership with adult allies, are critical forces in creating a just and healthy food system for all
Honoring ancestral ways of sustainability, respect, honor, and beauty.
Instilling confidence and a sense of responsibility to cultivate creative and innovative abilities to bring balance to the earth and economies.
Openly recognizing and talking about the legacy of oppression and privilege
Strong and honest partnerships between those who have privilege and those who don’t in order to transform the system and create something functional and sustainable
What we do
Convene the National Rooted in Community Summer Summit each year in a different location, hosted by a RIC member group.
Support annual regional gatherings and a biannual Winter Leadership Institute for training advanced youth leaders and for adult mentor professional development and peer to peer sharing.
Mentor in best practices, cultural sensitivity, and utilization of the creative arts in advocacy to over 100 youth empowerment and food justice organizations and adult allies nationally.
Bi-monthly social media blasts direct to youth on what’s hot in the movement, unique youth opportunities, and story sharing.
Provide training, structure and facilitation for peer-to-peer interaction and campaign building with the Youth Food Bill of Rights

Why support Us
Our vision is of a just and healthy food system in which youth take leadership and offer their gifts to build resilient and thriving communities through food systems transformation. We see youth as designers and creators of dynamic food and health programs, socially responsible enterprises, and people centered policy, in order to generate vibrant communities and equitable economies.
