Los Angeles Wilderness Training

Teaching YOU to take youth on an experience of a lifetime

Our mission is to create opportunities for urban youth to experience wilderness first hand by training their adult leaders and providing equipment.

LAWT exists as a comprehensive, ongoing source of support to agencies that lead youth wilderness trips. We believe that urban youth, once exposed to wilderness, have a broadened sense of themselves, each other, and the world around them. LAWT extends its services to the several counties of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. We hope other organizations will take this vision to the rest of the country and the larger world.

LAWT‘s strategy for achieving its mission is to provide Los Angeles youth agency staff with wilderness leadership training and outdoor equipment so that they, along with the youth they serve, may explore the power and beauty of California’s wilderness.

Leaders who pass the trainings for either front country (car camping) trips or wilderness (overnight backpacking) trips then have access to LAWT’s up to date “gear library.” This collection of equipment includes tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, outdoor clothing, hiking boots as well as stoves and cooking gear. In June 2015 one group checked out 60 backpacks, 60 sleeping bags and sleeping pads. At the same time several other groups were in the field using LAWT equipment.

To provide comprehensive training for adults interested in taking youth into the wilderness. What’s more, we allow FREE access to our extensive Gear Library, enabling adult youth leaders to take their participants outdoors to have a safe and positive wilderness experience.
